As I write this article today, I will be one of many around the country that is feeling the effect of an early morning session watching the Qatar FIFA World Cup. For many of us this is the time when excitement and passion for the beautiful game peaks, and where club rivalries are put aside, and we become one nation. Sadly, on this occasion New Zealand will not be taking centre stage, and many of us are still thinking “what if “after missing out at the final leg of qualification.
Never before in the time of a World Cup has there been as much scrutiny on a home nation and FIFA themselves. Controversy has followed from the moment Sepp Blatter revealed Qatar as the host. There have been significant barriers to overcome, stadiums, timing of the tournament, size of country; the list goes on.
Over the coming weeks I’m sure there will continue to be issues and questions raised both on and off the pitch, that should not solely focus on one organisation or country, but on the game itself. I hope that the Cup is remembered for fantastic performances, exciting games and its ability to bring the world together after such a trying time for major sporting events.
Speaking of which, if you haven’t seen them yet, there is still one home game left for you to come and support our fantastic Southern United Women’s National League side. Currently they are playing exceptional football and have given all the top sides a run for their money and shattered many dreams and aspirations of others glory. Their last home game is the 12:00pm, Sunday 4 December at the Logan Park Turf versus Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs. They would love to see you there.
