About the Programme

In partnership with New Zealand Football, the Women in Football – Leadership Programme is designed for women who are shaping the future of our game — our current and emerging leaders across the Southern region.

Originally launched alongside the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, this nationwide initiative aims to grow and sustain the beautiful game by empowering more women to step into leadership roles across football and futsal.

Purpose & Vision

Aligned with Southern Football’s Strategic Plan, this programme recognises that:

“The game, and all of the wonderful things it offers our community, are enabled by coaches, volunteers, and referees.”

The programme builds capability and confidence among women in football — helping participants close the ‘confidence gap’, challenge bias, and develop the tools to increase their personal and organisational impact.

Participants will explore leadership principles, communication skills, and self-development strategies to grow both on and off the field, while forming part of a strong, connected leadership network across the region.

How It Works

  • Two immersive days of workshops, connection, and learning

  • Each participant leads a small club or school project during the programme

  • Opportunities to share experiences and insights with peers

  • Clubs are encouraged to support and engage with their nominated participants throughout the journey

Who Should Apply

This programme is open to women across the Southern Region who are:

  • Active on club committees or administration teams

  • Emerging leaders within football or futsal

  • Passionate about contributing to the growth of the game

We encourage every club in the Southern Football region to nominate at least one representative. Past graduates are also invited to support and recommend new candidates.
